Dear Parents,
From the Spokesman Review February, 1986 (and still true in 2008)
Kids Love Their Dinosaurs
Philadelphia - Yes, the children surely do love their cuddly teddy bears and nursery rhymes about Jack and Jill and Mary's little Lamb. But not as much as they love big, ugly dinosaurs.
And the bigger and uglier they are the better the wee folk love them. Weilbacher, "dinosaur teacher" at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Science said, "They are fascinated."
It does not surprise him to meet young children who not only can pronounce tyrannosaurus and triceratops, but can tell you the difference between them. "And knowing how to say the names is as important to children as knowing about the creatures themselves", he said.
"It is something the adults can't do," Weibacher commented. "I can't think of any aspect of science that holds as much fascination for children."
Objectives of The Unit
1. To excite curiosity
2. To develop awareness
3. To develop ability to perceive and describe
4. To answer questions using various positional words
5. To expand vocabulary and new verbal skills
6. To introduce language skills using verbal, visual, auditory and tactile experiences
Fossils
Fossils are the way we learn about Dinosaurs. What is a paleontologist? What does he/she do? We're all going to find the answer. The children will have a "hands on" experience searching for fossils and recreating their own fossils. These tasks will require the children to think, discuss, cooperate and use their visual perception and eye-hand coordination skills.
